Econ - 405 Turkish Economy

This course is designed to discuss the structure of Turkish economy with an emphasis on its growth and development dynamics. The first few weeks of the course will examine the basic turning points of Turkish economic history. The remaining part will be on sectoral analyses and some current topics of Turkish economy. This analysis will particularly focus on recent macroeconomic data, economic reforms of Turkey and its likely accession to the European Union. The course grade will be based on a mid-term exam (40 %) and a final exam (60%).
Students are expected to come up with newspaper articles on current issues of the Turkish economy. In the last 20 min. of each lecture, some of the hot issues of the economy will be discussed in the class.
1) Features of the Turkish economy in the pre-republican period.
2) Turkish economy during the formative years of Turkish Republic, 1923-1930.
3) Etatism in the Turkish economy, 1930-1940.
4) New economic order in the world economy and the incorporation attempts of Turkey to this system, 1940-1960.
5) Features of planning period. Implementation of import substitution policies, 1960-1980
6) Liberalization attempts and structural transformation in the Turkish economy;1980-2000
7) 2000 - Onwards

c) Expectations - Consumer and Business Confdence

f) Public sector and fiscal policy
g) Public debt dynamics
h) Financial structure and monetary policy
